ART 141: Introduction to Digital Art

This is home to projects done in the digital art class I took at Scripps College in the fall semester of 2022. Enjoy!

Final Project: Brazil x SoCal

These are the final pieces I created inspired by surreal photography using Photoshop. In each image, I chose to combine photographs I took during my semester abroad in Brazil, and photographs I took during my college experience in Southern California to create a series of new landscapes in the form of old postcards.

Curitibángeles is a combination of landscapes from Curitiba, Brazil and Los Angeles. It features one of the forests in Curitiba and the skyline and Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, as well as an escalator from a Los Angeles Metro station.

Rio de Beverly Hills is a combination of landscapes from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Los Angeles. It features one of the naval forts in Niterói, in the state of Rio, and a street Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.

Santa Walk of Fame is a combination of landscapes from Santa Isabel, Brazil and Los Angeles. It features a farm in the countryside of the state of São Paulo and Walk of Fame in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Caminho da Lage is a combination of landscapes from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Los Angeles. It features the Parque da Lage in Rio and a moving walkway from the LAX airport. It contrasts nature with urban life to show how dynamic cities can be.

Sketchbook

We were instructed to create four works based on our lessons in Photoshop: a collage using a specific theme, a photo retouch, a piece using masking and compositing. and a scanograph.

In My Own World: This collage piece explored the concept of dreamscapes, memory, and travel. Created in Photoshop, in each bubble is a backshot photograph from different cities in Brazil and Southern California.

Here Comes the Sun: Made in Photoshop, I transformed a photograph taken during my trip to Panama into a graphic with the words “here comes the sun”. These words reference The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun”; during the trip, I had the euphoric feeling that everything was going to be all right, as the lyrics say, so the text fit perfectly.

Hollywoody: This piece was made in Photoshop using masking and compositing in the style of surrealism photography. I combine photographs taking in Rio de Janeiro and in Los Angeles to create a new landscape I call Hollywoody. During my time in Brazil, whenever I said I went to college near Los Angeles, the first thing most Brazilians would say is “wow, Hollywood!”, which they pronounce, in Portuguese, as something like “Hollywoody”. This postcard-style image inspired my final project, the collection of postcards shown above.

Interior: This piece is a scanograph created using random objects in my room. I placed them in a way that would create texture and movement with spots of color.
